In the magical mists of Dehradun

Dehradun, a fabulous city wrapped in mythological and mystic tales, is situated in the foothills of Shivaliks. This city is no less a prized catch for the tourists than Haridwar, Rishikesh and Mussoorie. Tourist places in Dehradun comprise both of natural sites as well as historic and religious buildings. The capital city of the hilly state harbours several research institutes which are most explored destinations for scholars, in their quest. The city further gains importance as it lies on the way to yet another beautiful place Mussoorie. The pleasant weather refreshes the mind and soul. Fluctuations in the day and night temperatures are quite decent.

Some prominent places in Dehradun are:

Sahastrdhara : Meaning ‘Thousands of Streams’ is an ideal picnic spot. The water of the streams is said to have medicinal qualities and effects the body as a sulphur spring flows nearby, which helps in curing several diseases. A dip in Sahastrdhara is a real bonus.

One more interesting place in Dehradun is the ‘ Robbers Cave’ which is popular among locals as ‘Gujju pani’. Here rivulet flows between two parellel hills giving in the shape of a cave. It is just a fifteen minutes walk from tower clock located in the middle of the city. Other places worth visiting are Tapovan and Lachhiwala.

Places in and around Dehradun:

One can roam around the city which is no less amusing than beautiful picnic places. One can go to Tibet market or Pultan bazaar, close to the clock tower.

For spiritual quest lots of famous temples are there with their mythological references and historical importance. The first that comes in the list is Tapkeshwar temple. Tapkeshwar is a Shiva temple and has been named so due to the fall of river water on the Shiv ling. Then there is Laxman Siddh temple, Sai darbar temple, Santala devi temple, Chandrabani temple.

Another remarkable temple which catches the attention is Buddha temple with Stupa. It is at a walking distance from 1Air Force Selection Board Clement town. In the centre of the temple is placed a huge golden idol of Buddha, about 103 feet high. It was inaugurated by Dalai Lama. One step forward and comes the shrine of Buddha, seated on a lotus full of colours. On the inner walls of the building are the paintings presenting stories related to Buddha.

Around the golden idol are metal structures which are called Chakras. It is said that whosoever rolls them gets the advantage of ‘Japa’. The magnificence of the shrine, calm surroundings and well maintained terraces leaves indelible marks on the mind. The whole surroundings give the feeling of a mini Tibet.

The journey of the places is not complete without visiting world famous Forest Research institute FRI, Indian Military Academy, Rajaji National Park and Malsi Deer Park.
