Chetan's dream run has a disappointing end

India’s ace shuttler Chetan Anand's dream of clinching his first Grand Prix title was turned into pieces as he despondently lost 16-21, 12-21 to Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana in the men's singles final event of the Yonex Sunrise India Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament played at the Gachibowli Stadium here on Sunday.

Anand, the reigning national champion meekly surrendered against his opponent in just 33 minutes without posing any challenge against him. In the women's category Mi Zhou of Hong Kong emerged champion as she pipped Chinese Lan Lu 21-14 21-14 in the finals.

Chetan faltered at the final hurdle after having a dream run in the tournament till he entered the finals. Chetan also disappointed rapturous crowd that was constantly cheering for the National champion.

Chetan wasn’t in his element on Sunday as he badly lacked the consistency and class that saw him through to the final. Chetan’s feet weren’t moving as well on the other hand World No. 12 Ponsana came up with a pearl of a game in the city of pearls.

He never gave a single opportunity to his opponent once he gained the impetus after wrapping the first game at 21-16. The Thai then switched gear in the second one with some more enjoyable drops.

The Chinese duo of Zhendong Guo and Zhogbo Xie notched up the men's doubles title after beating Choon Eng Chew and Chong Ming Chan of Malaysia 19-21, 21-14, 21-12. In mixed doubles, another Chinese combine of Hanbin He and Yang (F) Yu of China claimed the title after crushing Kristof Hopp and Birgit Overzier of Germany 21-18, 21-9.

Yu Chin Chien and Wen Hsing Cheng of Taipei claim the honours in the women's doubles category by defeating Miyuki Maeda and Satoko Suetsuna of Japan 21-17, 21-16 in their final match.

RESULTS:

Men: Singles: Ponsana Boonsak (Tha) bt Chetan Anand (Ind) 21-16, 21-12;

Doubles: Zhendong Guo & Zhongbo Xie (Chn) bt Eng Chew Choon & Ming Chan Chong (Mas 19-21, 21-14, 21-12.

Women: Singles: Mi Zhou (Hkg) bt Lu Lan (Chn) 21-14, 21-14;

Doubles: Chin Chien Yu & Hsing Cheng Wen (Tpe) bt Maeda Miyuki & Suetsuna Satoko (Jpn) 21-17, 21-16.

Mixed Doubles: Hanbin He & Yang Fu (Chn) bt Kristof Hopp & Birgit Overzier (Ger) 21-18, 21-9.
