Six Indians advance to F5 Futures second round

Indians tennis players started off their campaign quite well as they eased past into the second round of the $10,000 India F5 Futures ITF Men's singles Circuit played at the CLTA Stadium here on Tuesday.


The Indians moved into next round included top seed and Davis Cupper Rohan Bopanna, promising youngster Yuki Bhambri, Divij Sharan, Harsh Mankad, Vivek Shokeen and qualifier Virali-Murugesan.

Wild card entrant Delhi’s Yuki played true to his potential to outwit John McGahon of Ireland in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in 75 minutes. Divij Sharan fought his way hard to register a thrilling 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5) upset victory over fourth-seeded Ashutosh Singh.

Yuki played a consistent game all throughout the match and got crucial breaks in the fifth and ninth games to clinch the first set. However, error-prone McGahon committed number of unforced errors and played in patches as he got in to 2-1 lead in the second set with his powerful ground strokes breaking his rival serve in the third game.

Brawny Bopanna came up with 12 aces to overpower local wild card entrant Vijayant Malik 6-3, 6-4. Mankad rallied from losing a set to beat Ciaran Moore of South Africa. Vivek Shokeen blasted his way past qualifier Shi Ji of China in straight sets.

V.M. Ranjeet got the better off Purav Raja 7-6(4), 6-2 in straight sets after facing some anxious moments initially. Later in the day Vivek Shokeen and Ashutosh Singh combined well to storm in to the doubles quarters after spanking Ilya Belyaev and Sergei Krotiouk of Russia 6-0, 6-1.
