Raipur, Oct 17 (IANS) The Election Commission has asked the Chhattisgarh government to transfer collector of Bijapur district, in a part of the state hit by Maoist insurgency, officials said Friday.
They said that the government received the instruction late Thursday for the transfer of L.S. Ken, who is also Bijapur's district election officer. He has been called back to the state secretariat.
Manish Tyagi, deputy secretary, mining, has joined as the new district collector, Bijpaur, which is based in the state's extreme southern region.
The Maoist-infested state goes to polls in two phases - Nov 14 and 20 - to elect a new 90 member state assembly.
Officials said that Ken was kept away from the election process due to his alleged involvement in a land-acquisition case in undivided Madhya Pradesh when Ken was the deputy collector of Shivpuri district. Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh.
The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Madhya Pradesh submitted a `challan' (report) in a court after a detailed probe into the case. It is said to be the main reason for his transfer.
The commission has set up 20,952 polling stations in Chhattisgarh where 15,207,734 voters will be able to exercise their franchise. In the first phase, 39 assembly segments included Bijapur will go to polls while 51 seats will see election in the second phase.
