Tirunelveli (Tamil Nadu), Oct 15 (IANS) Three people, including two women, were killed and eight injured Wednesday when a shop's overhanging eave collapsed in this Tamil Nadu town, police said.
A large crowd had gathered at the dilapidated complex that houses a government-owned cooperative bank and several shops, including the fair price shop whose eave collapsed. People had come in large numbers following rumours that kerosene would be distributed to below-poverty-line ration card holders.
The jostling led to pressure on the support to the eave leading to its collapse, fire brigade workers said.
The victims were identified as Chellammal, 55, Chellathai, 56 and Muthu, 56.
Situated 600 km south of state capital Chennai, this district faces a shortage of electricity and cooking gas cylinders leading to a huge demand for kerosene.
