India's ace golfers and PGTI members Jeev Milkha Singh and Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia will spearhead the Indian charge at this week’s World Golf Championships (WGC) – CA Championship that will be teed-off at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami, Florida.
The Indian duo of Jeev and SSP made the cut for the prestigious WGC-CA Championship due to their ranking on the current European Tour Order of Merit. While Jeev is currently sixth on the European Tour Order of Merit, Chowrasia is ranked 12th after dropping two places down after March 10 as he was on 10th place before.
The two PGTI members will fight it out against top 10 players of the world golf at US$ 8 million event. The field at Doral includes golfing superstars such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Adam Scott, K J Choi and Sergio Garcia.
Jeev Milkha Singh is looking forward to the Miami challenge in as he has been in tremendous form of late, having posted two runner-up finishes over the past five weeks. He finished runners-up at the Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesia Open in February and was once again second at last week’s Ballantine’s Championship in Korea. The former Asia No. 1 was also tied 11th at the Johnnie Walker Classic in India earlier this month.
Jeev’s performace at the Ballantine’s Championship not only helped him climb from 90 to 79 in the official world golf rankings but also elevated him to second place on the Asian Tour Order of Merit and sixth on the European Tour Order of Merit.
While disappointed that he lost to Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland on the third hole of a playoff for the inaugural Ballantine’s Championship in Korea on last Sunday, Singh reckons his game is good enough to land a big title.
“I gave it a good effort. I would like to congratulate Graeme for playing excellent golf and I’m looking forward to Doral now because I’m playing well,” said Jeev, who finished tied 28th in Doral last season.
“So maybe, there’s something better waiting for me there,” Jeev added.
SSP Chowrasia who had taken the golfing world by storm when he won the Emaar-MGF Indian Masters in February is now set to make his debut at the WGC-CA Championship. The professional from Kolkata is currently ranked 165 in the world besides being third on the Asian Tour Order of Merit and 12th on the European Tour Order of Merit.
Chowrasia now has a great opportunity to enhance his reputation by putting up a memorable performance at the WGC-CA Championship. Chowrasia’s recent success has ensured that he is considered a major contender every time he tees up. The European Tour full card holder is aware of this fact.
“Now I know my game will be watched even more closely. But I will still not put pressure on myself," said Chowrasia, who improved from his 38th place on the 2006 Asian Tour Order of Merit to 32nd in 2007.
