Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza’s good run came to halt after defending champion Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia overpowered her in straight sets in the pre-quarterfinal match of the $2,100,000 Pacific Life Open WTA Championships being played in Indian Wells on Wednesday.
The Hyderabadi, who is nursing a wrist injury, went down fighting 6-1, 7-6 (4) to World number eight Hantuchova in a keenly contested tussle that lasted for almost two hours.
Sania couldn’t be able to put any resistance against her opponent in the opening set as Hantuchova saved all the eight break points. It was going pretty same in the second set as well as Sania was trailing 0-5 but the Indian top-ranked women tennis player battled hard and rallied to level scores 5-5 and further made it 6-5 stretching it to tie-break.
However, Hantuchova bounced back and drew level and the match went into tie-breaker. Sania was troubled by a wrist injury and said she aggravated her injury during the match.
Eighth seeded Leander Paes and Paul Hanley of Australia faced whipping in their doubles quarterfinal encounter as they comprehensively lost to Canada's Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonijic of Serbia 2-6, 1-6 without posing any threat to their opponents.
