Laloo done wonders again, railway revenue up by 10.97

June 07: The recently turned management guru and CEO of Indian Railways, Laloo Prasad Yadav, has really done the best to keep the pace of growth in constant terms. This can be seen vividly in the recently released revenue data of the Railway department which shows that the periodical earnings and freight loading of Indian railways have gone up to 10.97 per cent during April-May of this year.

Approximate gross earnings and freight loading has increased considerably maintaining the pace of growth of Indian Railways. For the period from 1st April 2007 to 31 st May 2007, the total earning of Railways has gone up to Rs. 11001.05 crore from last years’ Rs. 9913.49 crore with an increase of 10.97 per cent.

So far the performance is impressive as per the profit generation in all fields whether by passenger coaching earning or freight earning. In passenger earning an increase of 12.01 per cent has been registered in the current financial year compared to the previous one. During the two months period from 1 st April to31 st May, the earning recorded was Rs. 3283.59 crore, which is comparatively higher than the last year performance of Rs. 2929.17 crore.

The growth of passenger earning is due to the increase of number of passenger during April-May that is 5.48 per cent higher compared to the same period of last year. According to official report a total of 1059.99 million have traveled in comparison to last year’s 1004.92 million.

The growth of number of passengers is a good sign as it will increase the earning further in future. Importantly the number of passenger in suburban and non-suburban sector has also increased as 4.62 and 6.43 per cent respectively.

Also there has been significant increase in total freight earnings that has gone up to Rs. 7309.66 crore compared to Rs. 6642.37 during the same period (1 st April-31 st May) of last financial year. It is an upfront increase of 10.05 per cent.

The productivity in other revenue earnings sources has also improved to Rs. 312.10 crore with an increase of 18.96 percent. It was Rs. 262.35 crore during the April-May of last year.

By several other services Indian Railways has also added some revenue of Rs. 95.70 crore during April-May 2007, which was 20.23 percent higher than the same period last year.
