June 7: India might not be a member of G8 but the opportunity created by G8 summit seems to be inevitable. Besides much awaited meeting with US President George Bush, prime minster Manmohan Singh is expected to meet its one-time “adversary” Chinese president Hu Jintao and Nigerian president Umaru Yar'Adua, on the sidelines of G8 summit in Germany.

The meeting with Nigerian president aimed to enhance the focus on African countries as the world attention turns to mineral and resource-rich continent. Singh’s visit to Senegal this year is a part of the same process.

Camping in Berlin’s hotel Adlon Kempinski, Singh is expected to take forward the relations with China, a one time arch foe, just to enhance the influence of the world’s highly developing economic giants.

In his meeting with Yar’Adua, economist prime minister of India will take up the issue of country’s relations with the African union and also bilateral relations. Singh is expected to raise the issue of recent kidnappings of Indians in the African nation.

Nigeria is going through a rough patch of violence, and a law and order crisis prevails. More than a dozen Indians have been kidnapped recently.

In its meeting with Chinese premier, Singh will discuss the issue of global warming as two countries are at the receiving end due to huge addition of gases, responsible for global warming, to the atmosphere. Both countries are of the opinion that controlling the emission of gases will harshly affect various pro-poor initiatives undertaken by the respective governments.

Western countries especially developed nations have started a vigorous campaign to force India and China to counter the menace of global warming.

Meanwhile, Germany is under siege as the G-8 meeting is in progress. Local media estimated, more than $100 million has been spent on countering protests against the policies of G-8 countries. More than 16,000 police officers are armed to counter protesters. Weapons, dogs and fences have encircled the meeting place in the Baltic sea resort at the G-8 Outreach Summit in Heiligendamm.

The activists campaigning against developed nations have created a sense of fear among leaders of rich countries because of their unsustainable development policies, which have increased the distance between the poor and rich nations of the world.
