ArcelorMittal led by one of the world’s wealthiest person of Indian origin Lakshmi Mittal has been selected for US Government Energy Star Partner of the Year award for the year 2008.
ArcelorMittal will become the first ever steel company to get ENERGY STAR Award. Earlier PepsiCo, the global beverage giant led by Chennai-born Indra Nooyi, was conferred this award including auto giants Ford and Toyota, pharmaceuticals major Merck, fast food chain McDonald's, American retail major JC Penney and defense equipments maker Raytheon.
Earlier in the year 2005 ArcelorMittal, stressed on to become energy efficient and challenged to cut energy intensity by 6% within three year of stipulated time. That is a reduction of 192 million dollars in energy costs by 2009. The company constituted its Energy Committee in the same year to set energy reduction goals in each US facility.
Then it launched a three-year ArcelorMittal Energy Reduction Initiative that provided an energy plan aiming to cut ArcelorMittal's energy and carbon intensity.
The initiative taken by ArcelorMittal showed its commitment to energy reduction and its sustainability.
Reportedly to give thirst to the programme ArcelorMittal has distributed more than 20,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs to its employees in the US as well as community and business leaders and was ranked as one of the top 10 companies in the nation to collect the most pledges for the Energy Star's "Change a Light" pledge campaign.
The award will be conferred on April 01 by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and US Department of Energy at ENERGY STAR Award Ceremony in Washington. The award was introduced in the year 1992 to be given to company in recognition of the contribution made to protect the environment by reducing green house emission.
ENERGY STAR Award
Each year, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) admire the contribution of an organisation in its effort of protecting environment through sustainable energy saving means and to improve over all energy efficiency. Saving consumer’s money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is the prime focus area. Award winners are selected from over 9,000 organisations who take part in the ENERGY STAR program.
