June 07: Oman, in the Southwest Asia has been severely hit by tropical cyclones. The cyclone has resulted in the death of 15 besides injuring many others and caused some damage to life and property.
The cyclone named Gonu first hit the southern coast of Iran, on Wednesday, and later on spread to the other parts with ferocious wind of 200 km an hour and heavy rain.
This is the worst cyclone Oman has faced in thirty years. Reportedly one person has died and nine others were missing when they were caught in rubble of a factory which collapsed.
According to the natural disaster committee another intense wave may hit the coastal region and hence more than 40,000 people have been evacuated from the coastal areas in the southern Sistan-Baluchestan and Harmozgan.
Old buildings have been damaged and electricity supply and telephone lines were caught but no serious damage of life and property is reported so far.
Oil installation centers have been shutdown and the major problem now is the power and water supply, which has been cut following the disaster. Officials however have assured to take all measures but most towns in the eastern region remain out of communication. The stormy weather further makes it difficult in restoration and relief work.
