June 05: World Environment Day is back with a new slogan Melting Ice- a Hot Topic? It is indeed a burning topic that forces us to think about those horrible days when almost 40 percent of world population will be affected. Unless we show some commitment to prevent the hazardous future, there is no point going for any other campaign. To sensitize the people about such issues, World Environment Day is observed every year on June 05. On this day the United Nations and several other institutions appeal the world and make them aware of the environment calls, an international summit, which enhance political attention and promises to act accordingly.
The whole world is worried about the burning pot – rising temperature and global warming. That’s why seminars are being held throughout the world and many large scale programs have been set up to confront this problem. United Nations has also made a program named UNEP, United Nations Environmental Program, for the same purpose. In the series of this plan, UNO has called a summit in Tromso, the city of Norway. The theme of the UNEP is nominated as ‘International Polar Year’ for supporting and saving the poles that seem to be the worst affected parts in the world. The chances of improvement are not looking good if certain solid steps are not being taken.
Global warming is drilling the poles very badly. It is presumed that if the condition remains same, most of the ice-rocks will be melting and would be a major cause of disaster as the layers of the coasts and oceans will rise. The rising sea level will drown small islands and the large coastal areas will be dipped. So many species, aquatic, marine and terrestrial will have to face the extinction.
According to UNDP report, it is presumed that 60 percent of the world population will live in the urban area by 2030 and will be mostly responsible for global warming. UNO is highly worried about this serious matter as no solid action has been taken from any of the countries so far as the Kyoto protocol and other measures to curtail carbon dioxide emissions are concerned. Asian countries have always supported for the cause but the developed countries like U.S. have always rejected the proposals.
A ban is applied in Greek port of Zakynthos, because the vehicles are being the major cause of air pollution, one of the factors responsible for global warming, while Sri Lanka is planning to plant tree on the tsunami-devastated coastline area and Japan is organizing a Fashion Show for encouraging people to abandon ties and suit jackets. UNO has appealed to the world to go together and make an eco-friendly environment which is resource-efficient.
However, the blame shifting by the power pack nations and world famous institutions show the irresponsibility and poor conscience development in these countries. Several Asian countries, who are in the developing stages have been held responsible for the forthcoming catastrophes. It is time for the super eight to talk sensibly and share some responsibility, rather than attend high tea parties and conferences.
