Reigning world champion India’s Viswanathan Anand continued its remarkable performance in the ongoing Morelia-Linares chess tournament as he outplayed Spaniard Alexei Shirov in the eighth round asserting his supremacy by taking his points tally to 5.5 in the second-leg of the championship that got underway in Linares on Thursday.
Anand emerged as day’s big winner. It took Anand 57 moves and some fine technique to earn the full point. Anand started out in the decisive phase with a half a point lead ahead of Alexei Shirov and Veselin Topalov, both of whom lost their eighth round games.
Anand marked his fourth win in eight rounds extending his lead to a full point. Anand is now one point clear of his nearest rivals Lev Aronian and Magnus Carlsen, who are at 4.5 points each.
Magnus Carlsen lost to Vassily Ivanchuk after squandering a winning opportunity earlier while Vaselin Topalov unending hard efforts in quest of a win backfired as he lost to Aronian. Aronian won the game in 65 moves.
