Jaipur, Jan 8 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh affirmed his faith in the India Diaspora in the task of building a modern India. .
Speaking at the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas here, Manmohan Singh welcomed his counterpart from Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar and assured a that the government would help in strengthening the ties between India and the Indian Diaspora and make efforts to enhance their contribution in the development of the nation.
"The government and people of India recognize and greatly value the important role being played by Indian communities living abroad. We believe that the Indian Diaspora has much more to contribute to the building of modern India," said Dr. Singh.
He added that government recently introduced a bill in the Parliament to bring amendments in the Citizenship Act, which would give recognition to the spouses of Indians living overseas.
Expressing his anguish over the recent global economic slowdown, Dr. Singh said: "The world is passing through a difficult phase. Many of you are experiencing first-hand the impact of the global economic slowdown. There is greater protectionism and attitudes towards migration have also hardened."
The Indian economy is slowing on a combination of feeble growth in the United States and Europe, a ratcheting up of interest rates to quash high inflation and a decision-making paralysis in government.
Asserting that India's high domestic savings would help achieve a 9-10 percent growth rate in the medium-term and economy was likely to withstand an uncertain external environment, Dr. Singh said: "Our country is also going through difficult times. Nonetheless, our economic fundamentals are strong and our constitutional processes are robust. We are up to the task of meeting these challenges we face as a nation. Despite an adverse international environment, the Indian economy is expected to grow by about 7% this financial year ending 31st March.
"However, we hope to bring back the rhythm of our growth processes to sustain an annual growth rate of 9-10% in the medium-term," he added.
Despite taking several measures to surmount rising turmoil in the nation like high inflation or the deadlock over the Ombudsman bill, Dr. Singh assured the gathering of Overseas Indians that all efforts will be made to meet the expectations of the people.
"We have attempted sincerely to address the rising expectations of our people with regard to governance and delivery of public services. The Right to Information Act has proved to be a powerful instrument of bringing in transparency in governance. I am confident that some of the other legislations on these issues, which are now on the national agenda, will make a similar impact in the years ahead," he noted. (ANI)
