London, Jan 7 (ANI): Robbie Fowler has sparked a wave of protest after posting a "blacked up" fancy dress image on Twitter.
Tweeters slammed the 36-year-old football legend for sending the snap showing himself in fancy dress apparently as the Motown singer Lionel Ritchie, 62.
"80's theme fancy dress 2 years ago... Any guesses. Not Chris Kamara," the Daily mail quoted Fowler as tweeting.
His tweet followed the on-going race row between Liverpool star Luis Suarez and Manchester United's Patrice Evra, which has led to criticism of the Merseyside club.
Fowler, who is now player-manager of Thai Premier League club Muangthong United, later deleted the picture from the social networking site after a string of angry Tweets.
However, he did not do this before a storm of replies blasted him.
"I think Robbie Fowler posting a photo of himself blacked up really isn't doing #LFC any favours right now," Tweeter Louise Brown said.
"Not very PC for these climes, don't suggest for Luis at the next LFC Xmas party ;)," Pete Marsden, another tweeter wrote.
According to Fowler's pal, he was only "taking the mickey out of himself."
"Robbie wouldn't have meant any harm. He was taking the mickey out of himself," Fowler's pal told the Daily Star
"But he decided to delete it after the PC brigade got on to him and some people were guessing it was Evra," the pal added. (ANI)
