Suarez apologises for racist rant, but not to Evra

London , Thu, 05 Jan 2012 ANI

London, Jan 05(ANI): Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has confessed using a 'racist' word after receiving an eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra.

But Suarez didn't issue a direct apology to Manchester United defender Evra who he was found culpable of racially abusing during a 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Manchester United in October.

"I admitted to the commission that I said a word in Spanish once, and only once. I never, ever used this word in a derogatory way and if it offends anyone then I want to apologize for that," said Suarez.

Suarez said he will never use that word ever again on a football pitch in England, the BBC reports.

"I told the panel members that I will not use it again on a football pitch in England," he added.

Suarez was heavily criticized for providing "unreliable" and "inconsistent" evidence at the hearing by the independent commission of the Football Association, which found him guilty of making the racist comment, and banned him for eight games as well as fined him 40 thousand pounds.

In his earlier statement Suarez had made it clear that he will be face his suspension despite not doing anything wrong.

"I will carry out the suspension with the resignation of someone who hasn't done anything wrong and who feels extremely upset by the events," he had said.

"In my country, 'Negro' is a word we use commonly, a word which doesn't show any lack of respect and is even less so a form of racist abuse. Based on this, everything which has been said so far is totally false," he had added.

He missed his first match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Jan 03 as part of the sentence. (ANI)
