Kabul, Jan 5 (ANI): The Afghanistan police has arrested the father-in-law of the teenage girl who was tortured, beaten and locked in a toilet for five months after she refused to become a prostitute, but is still looking for her husband.
Sahar Gul, 15, was rescued from a house in northern Baghlan province last week after her neighbours reported hearing Gul crying and moaning in pain.
According to police in Baghlan, her in-laws pulled out her nails and hair, and locked her in a dark basement bathroom for about five months, with barely enough food and water to survive.
They also burned Gul with cigarettes and cut out chunks of her flesh with pliers.
According to the local media reports, Provincial Security Chief for northern Baghlan province General Syed Zamanuddin Hussaini revealed her father-in-law Mohammad Aman was detained with the help of local residents in Pul-e-Khumri city.
General Hussaini added that Mohammad Aman was introduced to the provincial attorney general and the Afghan security forces are struggling to find Gul's husband, The Daily Mail reports.
According to the report, Aman has denied allegations of torturing Gul, saying that she was suffering from psychological disorders.
After hearing of the abuse, Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai said those responsible would be punished.
Gul, who suffered both mentally and physically, is being treated in a government hospital in Kabul, but doctors say she may have to be sent to India. (ANI)
