Coimbatore, Jan 3 (ANI): India's Formula One driver Narain Karthikeyan has said that it was pleasing to know that the country has become an automobile hub in Asia and would soon scale to the third position by selling over sixty lakh vehicles a year by 2020.
Inaugurating a road safety campaign in here on Monday, Karthikeyan said: "India has become the automobile hub in Asia. There are a lot of manufacturers who have set up huge facilities."
"What will happen in the future is that our roads are going to get much more crowded. By 2020 they are saying we will be number three in the world selling to over fifty to sixty lakh vehicles a year," he added.
He further said that Indian roads would soon be over crowded urging people to ensure all safety measures while driving.
The ace Indian driver also excitedly watched the vintage cars and scooters displayed by the state police department.
Commander at Air Force Administrative College, Coimbatore, M. S. G. Menon said that the seven day long awareness campaign would host a mini marathon along with several other competitions aimed at educating the crowd about road safety.
"We kick started today's process with the inauguration of the safety week by Narain Karthikeyan, the ace F1 driver. Along with this we have a mini marathon, which is primarily aimed at educating the crowd about road safety. We have quiz competitions, painting and other competition that is planned and also a blood donation camp," he said.
The objective of the campaign was to highlight the need to adopt safe driving practices.
The weeklong road safety campaign, which kick, started on January 2, would end on January 8. (ANI)
