Panchkula, Jan 2 (ANI): Family of 27-year-old Indian student, Alok Gupta, who was shot dead on Christmas Day in Canadian city of Surrey in Vancouver said on Monday he suspected what he referred to as 'foul play'.
Gupta's father, Harish Bhai Gupta, said his son did not have any enemies but he said he feared the killing might be race related.
"It is for sure that he did not have enmity with anyone. All his friends there have also said that he did not have enmity with anyone and he was not involved anywhere. If despite that he has been killed and there has been a robbing also then I think there is some foul play. It could be a case of racial discrimination also. I cannot rule that out," said Harish Bhai Gupta.
Gupta has complained that Canadian authorities did not hand over the autopsy report.
Alok's family also criticised local authorities for failing to contact them to inform them about the incident.
Alok's mother, Pushpa, said they were informed of her son's death by his friends.
"Some friend from there informed us that he has been shot. He used to say that he goes to store because he was able to study properly there," said Pushpa.
She added that Alok had moved to Canada seeking a better future and had enrolled in Master's degree in Business Administration at the Kwantlen University.
Recently, in a separate incident, Anuj Bidve was shot in the head at point-blank range when he was out with friends in the English town of Salford in the early hours of December 26.
The killings in Canada and the UK have sent shock waves across India as parents express concerns over the safety of their children studying or living abroad. (ANI)
