Chennai, Dec 31 (ANI): Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), V Narayanasamy, on Saturday urged Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to provide monetary compensation with an aim to carry out relief and rehabilitation operations in the states hit by cyclone 'Thane'.
"Lot of damage has been done. Therefore, I requested the honourable Prime Minister that the central teams should go there, assess the damages and compensation has to be given to the states for relief and rehabilitation. And the Prime Minister has agreed. The Prime Minister and the Home Minister (P. Chidambaram) have told me that the state government has to send the initial report about the amount of damages that have been caused," said Narayanasamy.
"The Central Government will act quickly, but I made an appeal to the honourable Prime Minister for the early amount before the team comes and the interim relief has to be announced by the Government of India so that the relief work can be started immediately," he added.
The cyclone Thane has claimed 33 lives in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The cyclone, which hit Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts on Friday, left a trail of destruction and threw life out of gear. (ANI)
