US announces $10m reward for information on alleged Al Qaeda financier

Washington, Fri, 23 Dec 2011 ANI

Washington, Dec 23(ANI): The United States has offered ten million dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of an alleged Al-Qaeda terror network financier Yasin al-Suri.

The US State Department said it was the first time that a "terrorist financier" is being targeted in such a manner.

The reward aims to disrupt al- Suri-led financial network spreading to neighbouring countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq.

"He is a dedicated terrorist working in support of al-Qaeda with the support of the government of Iran," a US State department official Robert Hartung said.

"As a key fundraiser for the al-Qaeda terrorist network, he is a continuing danger to the interests of the United States," he added.

Hartun said al-Suri alias Ezedin Abdel Aziz Khalil operated under an agreement between al-Qaeda and the Iran Government, The BBC reports.

The US treasury department had earlier blacklisted Al-Suri along with five other members.

Hartung pointed out that the US Rewards for Justice programme has paid over 100 million dollars in reward to 70 people who provided credible information which helped to avert terror attacks or bring culprits to book. (ANI)
