Kolkata, Dec 15 (ANI): Death toll in West Bengal hooch tragedy has mounted to 81 following twenty four more deaths.
The incident occurred yesterday when more than hundred fell ill after consuming illicit liquor in Sangrampur area of South 24 Parganas District.
Among the dead were mostly labourers, rickshaw-pullers from 10 villages in Mograhat and Sangrampur, that fall under the Usthi police station, around 40 km from Kolkata.
Reports of the post mortem conducted on the dead indicate that the cause of death was respiratory and cardiac failure.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal government announced compensation of Rs two lakh each to the families of those who died.
Union minister Mukul Roy, District Magistrate N S Nigam, SP L N Meena, Zilla Parishad Sabhadipati S Sheikh and CPI(M) leaders Rezzak Mollah and Sujon Chakrabarty visited the hospitals. (ANI)
