Rahul Gandhi compares BSP rule in UP to 'currency note eating elephants'

Badayun, Wed, 14 Dec 2011 ANI

Badayun, Dec 14 (ANI): Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday once again hit out at the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh, saying his party would revive the fortunes of the state and usher in development aiming at prosperity of the common man.

"Elephants normally eat leaves. But you have magic elephant in Lucknow, which eats currency notes," said Gandhi, while slamming the Mayawati Government in Uttar Pradesh.

Gandhi, who is on the second day of his five-day tour as part of his campaign in Uttar Pradesh, further accused the Mayawati Government of not generating employment in the state.

"UPiites have built roads in Maharashtra, they work in Kerala, they help the farmers in Punjab...but they do not have roads, electricity or water in their villages. Who built the elhi Metro? Who is working in Ladakh?" asked Rahul Gandhi, while trying to persuade the voters to give the Congress Party an opportunity to govern in Uttar Pradesh.

"Twenty-two years have gone by. What did you get? Mulayam Singh came. He talked about caste. Then Mayawati came. She also talked about caste. Give Congress five years. We will show that we can transform this state," he added.

Stating that people mocked at him for visiting villages and having food at a poor man's house, Gandhi accused the opposition parties of not thinking about the future of the country, and said that he saw strength in the rural villages.

"They won't talk to you. They won't come amidst you. They won't shake hands with you. They won't come to your house or have food. They will not drink water from your well. They sit in AC rooms. They won't talk about farmers," said Gandhi.

"And when I come to your houses, have your food, I am ridiculed. They ask what happened to Rahul Gandhi. I see strength in you, in rural villages," he added.

Gandhi, who is leaving no stone unturned in giving a tough fight to the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the forthcoming state assembly elections, is visiting various parts of the state.

He has focused equally on the lower caste Dalits, Muslims, socially backward classes and marginalised Hindus during his visits to Uttar Pradesh.

The Uttar Pradesh elections, which are scheduled in the early part of 2012, is being seen as a stepping-stone for the Congress Party to establish a firm political base in India's fifth largest and most populous state before the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
