Kochi, Dec 14 (ANI): Senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Ashok Singhal has admitted that his outfit had provided support to the anti-corruption movement led by social activist Anna Hazare, only as patriots, by distributing food to the people gathered at the protest venue in August.
Talking to reporters here, Singhal said: "We have been in the movement but not as RSS but as Rashtrabhaktas (patriots). Our organisation was feeding all those people last time. Several days they had to feed, day and night, 24 hours. We did not tag it as VHP. We named it only 'Anna Rasoi' (Anna Kitchen). He (Anna Hazare) did not know it. Neither the Anna team knows about it and we don't even want them to know about it."
Many questions on the anti-corruption protest were raised in connection with its funding for the venue and food being distributed to the people who poured in from all strata of society to support the cause.
Volunteers of the movement called India Against Corruption were seen providing food and water to Hazare's supporters.
Singhal also commented on the current standoff between Kerala and Tamil Nadu over the Mullaperiyar Dam and criticised Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi for not initiating in resolving such issues.
"It is between two governments, they have to decide. The two governments have to decide and the major part of the decision has to be taken by Manmohan Singh. Sonia wants everybody to fight and fight and die. Sonia wants people to fight and fight and die, so that she rules," added Singhal.
Kerala and Tamil Nadu are locked in a dispute over the dam located in Idduki District. The dam and the river are located in Kerala, but the dam is controlled and operated by Tamil Nadu. The safety of the dam has been a matter of concern and a point of dispute between the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
While Tamil Nadu, the custodian of the structure, wants to increase the water level in the reservoir, Kerala has been insisting that it be reduced from the current 136 feet to 120 feet.
Kerala apprehends that this past-expiry date dam could crash and cause untold destruction in the state. Kerala is arguing for the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar in place of the existing one, which is being opposed by Tamil Nadu. (ANI)
