World number four Serbian lass Jelena Jankovic is the latest flower to add the glamour in the city of flowers, Bangalore, after she confirmed her maiden appearance in India to participate in the WTA Bangalore Open, starting on March 3 here at the KSLTA Kingfisher Stadium, the organisers said on Monday.
Last month’s Australian Open semi-finalist, Jankovic, the highest ranked, enhances more sparkle and competition to earn 300 WTA points and USD 600,000 in the rich field of Tier II WTA March 3-9 event that already include Williams sisters Venus and Serena, ranked eighth and 10 in the world respectively, Agnes Szavay of Hungary and Switzerland's Patty Schnyder.
The 22-year-old Jankovic is very much thrilled and excited about his first visit to India, “It is great to be part of India's first Tier II tournament at Bangalore. I look forward to play some tough tennis in front of a passionate lovers of the sport," she said in a statement issued here.
According to Tournament Director Sunder Raju, "Jankovic being one of the toughest players in the game starts as favourites as she is also the top-ranked player here, but with such strong opposition it will be a real test of her character and skill to clinch the title."
