New Delhi, Dec 13 (ANI): Chief Economic Advisor to Finance Ministry Kaushik Basu, has said the Delhi Economic Conclave to be held here would help India occupy bit of a global space in the area of knowledge and knowledge creation.
"These are just a commercial for the conference that we are organising but I don't feel bad doing a commercial because it is all good for a very good purpose. Last year we did a small conference around this time, Michael Spence was the international speaker, there are couples of others. What we thought after the success of that small conference was to step it up and actually we stepped it up vastly, i mean looking what we are doing this time. I will go into the little bit of its details but really to me this is to help India occupy bit if a global space in the area of knowledge and knowledge creation," Basu told the media here.
Over 500 business, government, media, academia and civil society leaders from India and abroad will convene along with other key stakeholders of the economy at the Conclave, which is being organized in New Delhi on December 15 and 16.
The conclave would discuss new areas and hypothesis, which would shape the future of the Global Economy.
'India does very well by emerging country's standards but we don't still occupy the space where I think we ought to when it come to most economic debates on the solid fundamental ideas, you will see the data is ours but the theories and theories, which are coming from foreign countries, typically from western countries. I mean there they have generated the theories and models of the way the world works and we work with them and I don't want to get into narrow shovernism and say that we should reject just because it is coming from else where but there are specificities to a region for which do need very good innovative thing to occurred in that region," said Basu.
Basu also said that India has the scope for taking up a leadership role in the knowledge creation and fundamental research pertaining to economics.
"I do believe that among all developing economies, emerging economies in the world, India has the scope for taking up a leadership role in the knowledge creation and fundamental research, research pertaining to economics is what I am talking about, economics, economic policies and development. And this conference I am hoping will signal as little of that we are in urban society and you will see that there re people who are being brought in, who sympathize with the government's view points, who do not sympathize with the government's view point and that is the whole idea. These are people from whom we want to get the best of ideas and then we will decide which one we should take and which one we don't take," said Basu.
Reportedly, hundred of companies, government institutions, media, academic institutions along with eminent leaders from India and abroad would convene at the Delhi Economics Conclave, 2011.
The conclave is expected to address various economic issues like macroeconomic related to finance, development and globalisation among others.
The conclave would also examine the challenges of the economic growth, held in the context of years of economic liberalisation in India, which would help nation to progress and would generate ideas for its future.
The conclave would also give an opportunity and a platform to address over issues like the New Global Compact, The Growth-Inflation Trade-Off, Global Financial Architecture, Employment Generation and Livelihoods Creation, Sustainability Imperative, Equitable and sufficient access to Resources, among other key subjects.
