New Delhi, Dec 11 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday hit out at the ruling Congress Party for not working seriously in bringing a strong and effective Lokpal Bill that would help wipe out deep-rooted corruption from the society.
BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, however, urged the people to have faith on the Parliament that was committed in passing the much-debated anti-graft bill for the welfare of the common man.
"The government's take is very contradictory and their intention is not to fight against corruption and the culprits. As a result, we can see people coming out on streets. But I still say that although we have lost trust in the government, people should have a trust on the Parliament. I believe that the Parliament will bring a strong and effective Lokpal bill," he said.
Taking a dig on the Congress Party for accusing veteran social activist Anna Hazare led crusade against graft to be funded by the party's fundamentalist wing, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Naqvi said that the government would soon start accusing the BJP for bringing natural calamities in the country.
"I feel that Congress party will soon start accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party for being behind a flood or a drought or a war that commences in the country. We are thankful that till now they only accuse us for leading a fight against inflation," said Sisodia.
"We feel proud if they say that BJP is behind the fight against inflation and corruption. We are not supporting militancy nor are we behind any militant attacks. We are with the people of India," he added.
Meanwhile, Janata Dal-United (JD-U) chief Sharad Yadav said the opposition parties were ready to hold discussions on the Lokpal Bill in the Parliament.
"A bill is due to come to fight effectively against corruption and we will be able to express our views and hold discussions in the Parliament not anywhere else," he said.
Hazare is presently sitting on a day-long fast at the Jantar Mantar here to protest against the proposals of Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Lokpal Bill.
Hazare, who is fighting for a strong anti-graft bill, has been demanding that the lower bureaucracy should be brought within the ambit of the Lokpal besides provisions for Citizen's Charter and setting up of Lokayuktas under a central law.
The 74-year-old social activist has also warned the government that he would sit on an indefinite fast from December 27 at the Ramlila Maidan here if a strong Lokpal Bill is not passed in the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
The Lokpal Bill is seen as a weapon to root out corruption and nepotism from the government machinery and in public life.
The proposed Bill envisages the setting up of a national anti-corruption watchdog to check financial mismanagement and corrupt practices that have deeply pervaded several democratic and civic institutions of India.
Hazare had staged an indefinite hunger strike against graft that he gave up on August 28 when the government agreed to deliberate the issues raised by him and his forum vis-a-vis the passage and enactment of the Lokpal Bill, a suggestion that has received unprecedented nationwide backing. (ANI)
