Islamabad, Nov 28(ANI): The Pakistan Army today said that the NATO cross-border airstrike which killed 24 soldiers and wounded at least a dozen others can lead to serious consequences.
According to army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas, NATO's regret over the attack is not enough.
He said that such incidents have happened in past that killed 72 soldiers and injured more than 250 troops in three years, the News reports.
He also denied reports that the NATO forces had acted for self-defence.
A media report had earlier said that a joint US and Afghan force working in the mountainous Afghan frontier province of Kunar came under attack in the early hours of Saturday, adding that the NATO helicopters and jets returned fire by targeting Pakistani positions with heavy weapons.
However, Major General Abbas said: "This is not true. They are making up excuses. What are their losses, casualties?"
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen had said that he had offered his condolences to Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani over the "tragic unintended incident."
"I have written to the Prime Minister of Pakistan to make it clear that the deaths of Pakistani personnel are as unacceptable and deplorable as the deaths of Afghan and international personnel," Rasmussen had said.
"This was a tragic unintended incident. I offer my deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the Pakistani officers and soldiers who lost their lives or were injured, and to the government and people of Pakistan, following the regrettable incident along the Afghan-Pakistani border," he added.
