London, Nov 27(ANI): Foreign terrorists, gangsters and paedophiles are expected to take full advantage of the chaos at ports and airports due to the strike by border check staff.
"There is a substantially increased risk that dangerous criminals will exploit the chaos," a source said.
The UK Government has called back staff with experience in dealing with visas and passports to help provide cover.
Scotland Yard counter-terrorism officials are worried that terrorists might enter the country, as the stand-in staff would not be able to detect fake passports, visas and other documents easily.
Sources told the Daily Express that they are also worried about security at small ports, as the UK Home Office is under huge pressure to get cover at key airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick.
However, the Public and Commercial Services Union expects all 14,000 UK Border Agency employees to strike over pensions and other benefits.
"The UKBA will not be able to cope. The Government has brought this on itself. They will have to stop raiding people's pensions to pay off the deficit," a UKBA spokesperson said.
The strike comes after the official figures suggested that nearly 5,000 people applied to remain in the UK.
"We have always been a tolerant nation and we should continue to consider genuine asylum claims. The system has been open to abuse in the past, however, and we need to do what we can to tighten it," a Member of Parliament John Baron said.(ANI)
