Latehar, Nov. 27 (ANI): Maoist threat looms large in Jharkhand's Latehar District, as the ultras recently destroyed an under construction bridge, posing problem to the locals.
A group of Maoists set fire to the unfinished bridge, with an aim to stall the construction of the bridge, which was being installed to aid the locals.
Locals here were a distressed lot, as they asserted the importance of the bridge for their survival.
"The bridge held a lot of importance for us, because a lot of people die in an emergency situation since it's not there. During the monsoons, there are floods, so people can't get their treatment done, since they can't step out. So, they cannot do anything," said Gulab Kujur, a local.
The womenfolk expressed their grief, as they had to open their clothes and wade through the neck deep water to cross over to the other end.
"After the school was constructed, all the villages needed a bridge to cross over to the other side. We were and are of the opinion that a bridge should be constructed. All the locals want this to happen. During the monsoons, we, including the women have to open our clothes and we have to walk in neck deep water. So, this is why we think that the construction of this bridge is essential," said Malini, a local.
The victims have complained to the concerned authorities, which have assured the locals of a solution in the near future.
Despite strong measures initiated by the central government to crush the ultras, the Maoist insurgency has gripped nearly a third of the country, spreading into the interiors of 20 of India"s 28 states.
The guerrilla war, waged mostly from the forests of central and eastern India by ultras of the banned outfit, Communist Party of India-Maoist, is seen as the country"s biggest internal security threat, say analysts.
A recent crackdown on rebel-dominated areas had raised hopes that the government was winning the battle against the Maoists whom Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described as India's biggest internal security threat.
However, the latest string of attacks by Maoist ultras, including repeated strikes and ambushes targeting security personnel deployed in insurgency-affected areas, has led to fears that security forces are ill prepared to deal with the threat.
For the past few years, the rebels have stepped up their attacks against the government, targeting and damaging democratic and civil institutions of the nation, such as schools, medical centres and government property. (ANI)
