Massive protests in Yemen over Saleh's 'immunity from prosecution' deal

Sanaa, Sun, 27 Nov 2011 ANI

Sanaa, Nov 27 (ANI): Hundreds of thousands of youths protested across Yemen in opposition to a recent agreement that grants President Ali Abdullah Saleh immunity from prosecution in return for leaving office.

According to eyewitnesses, government forces killed a civilian while protesting on the outskirts of the capital.

Protesters chanted slogans during the demonstration demanding the prosecution of Saleh, the Wall street Journal reports.

"Martyrs wrote with their blood, that Saleh must stand trial," read a banner held up by protesters in the capital.

The recent agreement, negotiated by neighboring Arab countries in the Persian Gulf, passes Saleh's powers to Vice President Abed-Rabbo Mansour Hadi and calls for a presidential election within 90 days.

While the international community has endorsed the deal, protesters and other opposition figures remained skeptical that Saleh was stepping down from power after ruling the country for 33 years.

The ongoing turmoil in Yemen threatens to overwhelm efforts to pull off a smooth transition of power from Saleh to a government that would share power more broadly, the paper said.

Under the power-transfer agreement signed in Riyadh days ago, Saleh retains his title but no authority. (ANI)
