Cooch Behar, Nov. 23 (ANI): West Bengal Forest Minister Hiten Barman has said that the state government would take all possible steps to maintain the tiger rescue centre, despite no financial assistance from the Centre.
"We'll be demanding for more funds and also the funds which we were promised before. If the funds are stopped in other states then it would get stopped in our state as well. So, here we have stated that even if the federal funds are stopped we shall continue maintaining our reserves through our state funds," Barman told mediapersons after an event in the Royal Bengal Tiger rescue centre in Khayerbari in Cooch Behar District on Tuesday.
Barman's statement comes in the wake of the Central Government launching several tiger projects to save it from decline.
According to some reports, due to paucity of fund, the zoo authority for the tiger project in Khayerbari might decide to shut down the maintenance centre or would relocate the animals to other zoo centres.
Currently, there are only six tigers at the rescue centre.
According to 2011 tiger census, there are approximately 1700 tigers left in the country. (ANI)
