Kapurthala (Punjab), Nov.21 (ANI): At least four prison staff or inmates have died and 15 others injured following a heated confrontation between prison officials and inmates at Kapurthala's Modern Jail on Sunday.
According to reports, the incident was sparked off first by a war of words, which descended into a physical brawl that involved gun fire.
Several inmates sustained severe bullet injuries in their legs, backs and shoulders.
The injured inmates have been admitted to the government-run Civil Hospital for treatment.
One of the injured, a woman, accused jail officials of opening fire on the inmates after they protested against the 'killing' of one of their fellow mates in the prison.
Another wounded inmate went on to accuse the prison officials of having 'killed' at least two inmates in the jail during the commotion.
Kapurthala Police is yet to give an official response on the incident. (ANI)
