Lucknow, Nov 19 (ANI): International Cricket Council (ICC) chief Sharad Pawar has termed former player Vinod Kambli's statement that the 1996 World Cup semi-final tie between India-Sri Lanka was fixed, as irresponsible.
Pawar said that Kambli should have informed about the match fixing to the governing body Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at that time itself whereas he maintained silence for over a decade and half.
"The statement made by him after many years is not right; if he is a honest and committed cricketer then he would have told the situation at that time only and for not telling anything about the match fixing till now makes him equally defaulter, but, I honestly feel that the allegations made by him is totally irresponsible statements," Pawar said.
He further viewed such a stance by Kambli to be one of dishonesty towards the nation.
He also slammed the former Indian batsman by saying that he lacked consistency and because of his erratic behaviour and form, the country's team didn't get a promising batsman.
"There is one thing that if Vinod Kambli had concentrated on his game, he would have become a successful and great cricketer like Sachin Tendulkar today. But for him, it is very unfortunate that there was no consistency in him and because of his lack of consistency, India didn't get a good batsman," Pawar said. (ANI)
