New Delhi, Sat, 19 Nov 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Nov.19 (ANI): Delhi has become the first state in the country to provide right to health to school children after implementation of the Right to Education Act.

Launching the Chacha Nehru Sehat Yojna, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said that under the project a comprehensive exercise to undertake the medical check-up of around 14 lakh students has been kicked off.

Dikshit had announced the plan during her budget speech March 22, 2011.

The scheme named after former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru has been meticulously chalked out to ensure a healthy society.

Delhi's Health Minister, Dr. A. K. Walia, presided over the function whereas Education Minister Arvinder Singh, lawmaker Veer Singh and Chief Secretary P. K. Triphthi were present as guests of honour.

Speaking on this occasion, Dikshit described the scheme as a big step to ensure a bright future for the students.

Dikshit stated that the scheme envisaged a plan to provide medical checkup free of cost to all children in Delhi.

Under the first phase, the government will cover nearly 14 lakh students studying in schools run by the city government.

In the subsequent phases, the government plans to cover children studying in MCD / NDMC, non school going children and children studying in private schools where medical checkup facilities do not exist.

The government is running 954 schools which will be covered in one year by nearly 125 teams, each comprising a qualified doctor, nurse and data entry operator.

The scheme is an example of collaboration between the Health and Education Departments for the benefit of school going children in Delhi.

Dikshit said the medical team will also disseminate a message of proper physical cleaning to avoid the occurrence of any disease and importance of prevention which is supposed to be better than treatment. (ANI)
