Raipur, Nov. 15 (ANI): Stating that the Naxals are the worst violators of human rights, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday said that the people at large need to understand that the rebels are involved in widespread cases of human rights violation.
Chidambaram, who was in Chhattisgarh to review the security situation, said: "The Naxals (Maoists) are the worst violators of human rights. They kill people by calling them police informers, they terrorise villagers. So, I think, people, civil society, intellectuals, professionals, students, teachers, must understand that the Naxals don't respect human rights either."
Chidambaram declared certain grants from the Central Government to build 45 new police stations, highways etc. He also said that the state government is recruiting more police personnel.
"We have identified two national highways, which required to be built quickly-Jagdalpur-Konda and Jagdalpur-Gopalapatnam. I am going to take it up with the ministry of road development and see what can be done. This is being pending for many years, we can't keep this pending for long, and we will have to find a way to build these routes quickly," he said.
Reiterating his stance against the Maoist, Chidambaram said that the state should remain alert in order to prevent the activities of the ultras.
"Naxalite activities are quite extensive and are quite widespread in Chhattisgarh. It is therefore important that we do not take the eye off the ball. We remain vigilant and we remain determined to curb this menace," he said.
Emphasising that Left Wing Extremism (LWE) was a major challenge for security and sovereignty for the country than terrorism, Chidambaram had earlier in September said the Centre was open to talks with Maoists provided they suspend violence.
Despite strong initiatives taken by the Centre, the Maoist insurgency has gripped nearly one-third of the country, spreading into the interiors of 20 states of the country. (ANI)
