Lucknow, Nov. 13 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Sunday reached out to the upper caste Brahmin and Kshatriya communities ahead of the 2012 assembly polls in the state.
Seeking to strengthen support ahead of the 2012 assembly elections in the state, Mayawati said that only a very small section of upper caste people were in economically comfortable circumstances, because of which they needed reservations in jobs and education.
"Barring very few people, most members of the upper caste community are economically backward, and suffer from rampant poverty and unemployment. It is because of this that many economically deprived members of upper castes across the country are seeking reservation in jobs and education," said Mayawati.
"The BSP supports this demand, and a letter has been written to the Prime Minister in this regard," she added.
Warning her supporters against listening to claims by opponents such as the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Samajwadi party, Mayawati refuted the allegations that she cared only for the lower caste Dalit community.
"In the view of the impending elections, it is possible that our opponents will try and mislead you by saying that because the state chief is a Dalit, she has worked only for people of her own caste and not for others, but this claim in neither appropriate nor justified," she said.
Advertising her period of rule as a positive phase for Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati urged her supporters to bring her to power with a clear majority.
"I request you to keep in mind the bad experience that the state has had under the BJP, the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, and not make any mistake that results in these parties coming to power," she said.
Mayawati came to power in 2007 with a simple majority. Her term expires in 2012.
The Uttar Pradesh elections, which are scheduled in the early part of 2012, is being seen as a stepping-stone for the Congress Party to establish a firm political base in India's fifth largest and most populous state before the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
