Millions of Hindus bathe in sacred rivers on occasion of Kartik Purnima

Varanasi/Haridwar, Nov.10 (ANI): Tens of hundreds of Hindu devotees took a dip and offered prayers in sacred River Ganges on the occasion of the festival of 'Kartik Purnima' across India on Thursday.

In Varanasi, devotees offered prayers and sought the blessings of the Almighty.

"People come here specially to take a dip in the River Ganges every year. Devotees come here in large numbers," said Dolly, a devotee from New Delhi.

A dip at Haridwar, one of the holiest spots along the Ganges' 2,000-km-long journey from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal, is considered auspicious. Hindus believe that bathing in the sacred river washes away their sins.

Security and traffic arrangements in the town were beefed up for the occasion.

Haridwar's Superintendent of Police Y.S. Rawat said that around 700 policemen, including personnel of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) had been deployed for the festival.

Legend has it that the city of Haridwar, which literally means 'Gateway to Gods', located at the foothills of Himalayas, is one of four places where the nectar of immortality fell to earth after spilling out of a pitcher during an epic battle between the gods and the demons.
