India’s top-ranked player and reigning World champion Viswanathan Anand staged a fine comeback to be placed at sole second spot, after losing to Levon Aronian in second round, as he registered a resounding victory over Norwegian wonder-boy Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Morelia-Linares chess tournament played at Morelia in Mexico on Sunday.
Anand outshined Carlsen in each segment of the game. The Indian ace adopted the Semi Slav Defence while the Moscow Variation couldn’t do much for Carlsen. Carlsen surrendered after 59 moves.
With this win Anand kept 100 percent score with black pieces in the tournament thus far. The victory also placed the Indian chess ace at sole second spot after gaining two points out of a possible three. Anand trails by only half a point from leader Veselin Topalov.
Former champion Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria emerged as the sole leader with 2.5 points as he put up an impressive show to relocate overnight joint leader Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine.
Ivanchuk, Aronian and Peter Leko of Hungary, with 1.5 points each, are on joint third while Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan, Alexei Shirov and Carlsen are placed joint sixth with a single point each in this category-21 event in the eight-field players.
