After making a buzz with people’s car Nano for just Rs 1 Lakh, there is another pioneering project as Tata has confirmed to be backing, a car that is powered by compressed air.
It is reported that Tata has decided to back French project to develop a car that runs on compressed air, the car which has been designed by Guy Negre is called OneCAT car, with five seats and its body is made of glass fiber, weighs 350 kg and runs on compressed air stored in carbon –fiber tank.
According to the report Tata entered into a deal with MDI a private company from France and has acquired technology right for India. The car will be ready for the launch by the end of this year or early 2009 with a modest price tag of £2,700.
The designer of this car claims that the car can achieve 120mpg on longer journeys and would be pollution free. The air tank will take three minutes to fill the air from the compressor. For longer journey one can use conventional fuel like diesel and petrol but with air one can drive the car at speeds below 50.
Expecting the car to be economical Negre said, “The first buyers of the air car will be people who care about the environment.”
But for now the car will be available only for the domestic market in India and those interested outside India will have to wait till Tata gets ready for its international venture.
