Darjeeling (W.Bengal), Oct.23 (ANI): The death toll due to a bridge collapse has shot up to 32 as two more bodies were recovered in Darjeeling District of West Bengal on Sunday.

At least 130 injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Around 50 people were rescued in a joint operation conducted by locals, army, fire brigade personnel and the police.

"We are conducting our final search and rescue operation. It is a joint operation with army, police, civil administration, forest department and fire brigade. We have conducted this type of operation in the night also but it was dark. You can't say for sure that there is no body (corpse) or someone is (alive) there," said Tamal Das, Sub-Divisional Officer of India's eastern Darjeeling District.

A British-era wooden bridge on a river caved in on Saturday evening as more than 200 locals stood on it to hear speeches of ethnic leaders such as Bimal Gurung.

According to media reports, the state government announced compensation of Rupees 2 lakh for the kin of the dead and also assured that they would bear the expenses for the treatment of the injured. (ANI)
