Pakistan with apprehension enters poll mode today

New Delhi, Mon, 18 Feb 2008 NI Wire

With qualms and confusion Pakistan today enter in the election mode, where the environment is tense amidst suicide attacks and poll related violence.

The much awaited election has grabbed the attention of the whole world which will not only define Pakistan’s future but will also decide the stability of this frenzied nation.

A suicide act on Saturday in which 50 people were killed and many injured has questioned the security arrangements and accordingly 80,000 troops are deployed to make the election more partial.

But the apprehension of poll rigging remains in different circle of politicians, Nawaj Shariff warned that the country will break if polls would be rigged amidst Musharraf’s assertion that poll will be free and fair.

“It could turn into a very chaotic situation and lead to some sort of anarchy,” he told the reporters.

“I think it is more than clear that a massive rigging plan is in place, it has been implemented,” he added.

Sounding confident that his party will win along with Benazir’s Pakistan People’s Party but warned that any manipulation in the result will lead to protest in the streets.

As the opinion poll has suggested that PPP will lead with Sharif’s PML- N (People’s Muslim League Nawaj) and PML-Q (People’s Muslim League Quaid-e-Azam), a pro-Musharraf branch of the Muslim League will be the one trailing behind the other two, but if this result is reflected in the poll result Musharraf is likely to face impeachment if the opposition wins two third of majority.

The assassination of Benazir Bhutto who died in a suicide attack on December 27 has made the situation grimmer for Musharraf who has been accusing al Qaeda for masterminding the attack.

Pakistan is contesting for 342- seat National Assembly and who is on the winning spree will be clear by Tuesday morning.

It is reported that the nervous Musharraf has admitted that his party might not be able to make the government this time and that he is thriving on Western support.

In an interview given to Jemima Khan former wife of Imran Khan he said that he could not understand that why there is hostility against him and that media is writing him off. He confessed that under the pressure of his Western counterparts he dropped the corruption charges against Benazir. He also described himself as the highest proponent of human rights.

The analyst believes that this election if not rigged will decide the future of Musharraf’s political career and it’s too early to make a prediction of election result overshadowed with doubts and uncertainties.
