The Aussie players once again proved that why they have been tagged World champions as they have come up to roses against India, beating them by 50 runs, despite their dismal batting show in a tri-series ODI match played at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
Chasing the target of Australia's 203, Indian batsmen faltered again and were bundled up at the score of 153 in 42 overs. The batters let down the spirited performance of bowlers after they restricted mighty Aussies 202-9 in the stipulated overs.
With this bonus point win, Australia now moved to 17 points in the chart ahead of India's eight. Sri Lanka, which has six points, plays India on Tuesday at the same venue.
Mitchell Johnson came up with a fine performance of 3-42 after none of the India batsmen could not be able to get past the score of 50, and all of them struggled to stand their feet in the middle against some strong bowling by Johnson (3-42), Nathan Bracken (2-21) and James Hopes (2-16).
Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni top-scored for India with 37 and his run out dismissal triggered the collapse as after that the visitors lost their last five wickets for just 19 runs.
Michael Clarke was named man of the match for scoring 79, when no other player reached even the score of 40. Reduced to 73-5 in the 24th over, Australia was bailed out of trouble from Clarke's 79 of 108 balls.
Clarke stitched a crucial 72-run partnership with Hogg for the seventh wicket that came to an end after Hogg was run out for 32. Australia lost quick three wickets for just three runs after Hogg’s run out.
Earlier, Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan picked up the prize scalps of Clarke, Matthew Hayden (13), Mike Hussey (5) and Nathan Bracken for naught to return with a figure of 4-41 giving his team a real chance of winning against Australia.
Ishant Sharma departed Adam Gilchrist (15) and Andrew Symonds (3) cheaply to reel Australia at 73-5 before Clarke resisted. India made a terrible start and was struggling at 59-4 in the 16th over.
Injured Dhoni (37) and Yuvraj Singh (26), who is still struggling with his form, stabled the innings with a fifth wicket stand of 56.
Dhoni, who used a runner in part of his innings, said he should be fit to play in the next match against Sri Lanka.
"I will be there in the next game as it's not really serious," Dhoni said.
