New Delhi, Oct 8 (ANI): Members of 'Mahila Morcha', the women's wing of the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP), hosted a seminar on specially-abled people here on Saturday.
Scores of specially-abled people attended the event that was named 'Saksham' to mean capable of doing in Sanskrit.
Addressing the seminar, senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj expressed her concern over the treatment of specially-abled people in the modern society.
She felt that they should be referred as 'Differently Abled' and the United Nations should give its approval to this term.
"A new term 'Differently Abled' was submitted to the United Nations vis-?-vis the specially abled so as to hold a discussion over this term as to why should we refer them as 'challenged'. Why can't we denote them as differently abled, a different kind of person and a different kind of capable people? I am disheartened that United Nations has not yet accepted this term," said Swaraj.
Focusing on the conduct of the specially-abled people by the society, Swaraj further said that the time has come to move forward.
"We should build the nature of the programme in such a way that those who have been working, taking initiatives in their lives, those who are successful, those who have made their lives meaningful and eclipsed the curse," said Swaraj.
"We must respect them and at the same time we should invite other women of same categories who can be inspired with such initiatives so that they could also develop a feeling that their lives are not cursed and they can make their lives meaningful," she added.
Swaraj also stated that similar programmes must be organised in every parts of the country in order to spread awareness.
The US Democratic National Committee coined the term 'Differently Abled' in the year 1980s as a more suitable term than handicapped. (ANI)
