Bilaspur, Oct 6 (ANI): An open jail in Himachal Pradesh's Bilaspur District has allowed 64 jail inmates go outside to earn money and make efforts to re-enter mainstream society.
Based on their good conduct, authorities at the jail have allowed them go to the market in the morning, earn their wages and return to the jail in the evening.
Inmates work in shoe and garments stores, electronic stores. Some do labour and carpenter related jobs.
"I am in this open jail for over 17 years now. This is a golden chance for convicts to come into mainstream of society and also improve themselves. I was able to contribute to my children's education and the growth of my family after this. This should be started in every jail in Himachal Pradesh and in other parts of the country," said Jagdish, a convict.
"We came to this open jail following a request from the government. We come out to earn wages and contribute to the family. I am also learning computers so that I can train my children after I am released from jail. We also request the government to release those who have completed their jail period," said Balak Ram, another convict.
Jail authorities are pleased with the good conduct and the sense of responsibility shown by these convicts.
Bhanu Prakash Sharma, Deputy Superintendent of Jail, said prisoners completing eight years of imprisonment are given opportunities to earn money outside based on good conduct.
He said the open jail has a capacity to house 80 inmates. By Hemant Chauhan (ANI)
