Lahore, Oct 6(ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Mohammad Ilyas, member of the selection committee, as chief selector of the national cricket team.
The shuffle came after Waqar Younis resigned from his position as Pakistan's head coach and chief selector Mohsin Hassan Khan was appointed the interim coach for the upcoming series in the UAE against Sri Lanka.
"As Mr. Mohsin Hassan Khan will be traveling to UAE as Coach for Pakistan Team, the management has decided that, in his absence, Mr. Ilyas will be the Chairman Selection Committee," the PCB said in a statement.
"Mr Ilyas will resume his duties with immediate effect," it added.
Ilyas, who played ten Tests for Pakistan between 1964-69, has quite a controversial background.
In June this year, he was suspended as national selector by the PCB for breaching its code of conduct, The News reports.
Ilyas, a paid selector, was penalised for criticising former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi and taking part in a television talk show with Salman Butt, who has been banned by the ICC on spot-fixing charges.
Last May, Afridi had slammed Ilyas, saying that as selector, he (Ilyas) always insisted on including his son-in-law Imran Farhat in the national team. Ilyas responded by making derogatory remarks against Afridi.t that time, the board also served Ilyas a show-cause notice after he sat with Salman Butt in a TV programme. Under ICC guidelines, no board member can liaise with a banned cricketer. (ANI)
