New Delhi, Oct 1 (ANI): In an endeavor to show that despite their age, elders were capable of performing the most difficult tasks, senior citizens held a rally to create awareness on International Day of Older Persons here today.
Over 3000 senior citizens from all over New Delhi congregated to walk and send out a message of solidarity. The rally started at Vijay Chowk and converged at Rajpath in the city.
"Today is International Day of Older Persons. We are holding this rally to show that even aged people can work with vigour, walk on their feet and do a lot of other things. To prove this, we are holding this rally. Also, children and grandparents love each other. We are holding this rally to prove this," said Vijay Sharma, a senior citizen
J R Gupta, organiser of the rally said that the aim of the rally was to convey a message that showed solidarity among elders.
"With the help from HelpAge India and Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, around three thousand of us, senior citizens from all over Delhi, have come to India Gate to tell people that all of the elders are together. We are celebrating this day to show that there should not be any discrimination," Gupta said.
International Day of Older Persons is a special day earmarked by the United Nations to spread awareness about aged people. The day recognises the contributions of senior citizens towards society and the problems that affect them.
The UN General Assembly, on December 14, 1990, decided to make October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons. (ANI)
