New York, Sep.23 (ANI): India is optimistic that a so far reluctant China will soon support India's bid for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Talking to reporters here, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Hardeep Puri said: "It is only a matter of time before China voices its support for India".
China a is the only country in the Permanent Five of the UNSC that has been non-committal about supporting India's permanent membership bid.
During Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's participation in the 66th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting, India will push for United Nations reforms, including in the UNSC to reflect current realities and create an equitable system.
India and members of the Group of Four (G-4) have been lobbying hard to maintain the momentum for reform of the UNSC. G-4 foreign ministers are expected to meet on the sidelines of this year's session to discuss UN reforms.
Briefing reporters about Prime Minister Singh's agenda, Puri expressed optimism about there being a forward movement on the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT).
He said that an agreed CCIT text was before a UN committee.
"My expectation is that the text will see action in the near future. I am cautiously optimistic, but I am not going to be giving timelines," Puri added.
Puri said India has been pushing for such a document as it was a victim of the scourge of terrorism for several decades now, unlike the US, which experienced it only on 9/11.
Prime Minister Singh will address the UNGA today and also have bilateral meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)
