Baramullah, Sep 22 (ANI): In a bid to improve sericulture business in Jammu and Kashmir state, the state government has organised a workshop to provide training to growers in improving the production of silk in the state.
Agriculture Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Ghulam Hassan Mir, who was at the silk worm seed farm in Mirgund village in Baramullah Ddistrict, said that over the last few years, the province had seen a decline in its production.
"We are reviving sericulture again with the help of a federal government scheme by which we are giving them free plants. We just toured the nursery and saw how we can prepare the plants and give the plants free of cost to the farmers. And we give them rupees 7 for the protection of the plants. The aim is that we want to cover up for the loss that we have incurred due to the plants and other raw material," said Mir.
The government has taken the initiative to boost the sericulture business, considering the impediments that it has faced in the last year due to the violence and continuous shutdowns in the Kashmir Valley.
The number of mulberry trees in the valley has decreased which has adversely affected the production and has driven the government to purchase mulberry plant seeds from outside the state.
The programme was launched in two other places Bandipora and Dhobiwan Tangmarg.
Hassan Mir also said that the programme would be launched across the state to provide a source of income to the unemployed. (ANI)
