Cape Town, Sept 13 (ANI): A South African man who was accused of firing the shot, killing Indian-origin bride Anni Dewani during her honeymoon last year, will never stand trial because of his brain tumour surgery.
Alleged hitman Xolile Mngeni, who has undergone surgery for a malignant brain tumour, would reportedly be declared unfit to stand trial for her murder, the Daily Mail reports.
"The way things stand now with all the chemotherapy Mngeni is having, he won't be able to stand trial," a source close to the case said.
Mngeni is due to appear in court next week in connection with the hijack and murder of 28-year-old Anni in November last year. However, if he remains too unwell, prosecutors will provisionally withdraw the charges of murder and kidnapping he faces, the paper said.
Anni was shot once in the neck and her body was found in the back of a taxi near Cape Town. Her new husband Shrien was accused in South Africa of paying for her killing, while the couple's taxi driver Zola Tongo has already pleaded guilty to arranging the murder and is currently serving 18 years in prison.
